About the Experience
Glenbrook Vintage Railway
Glenbrook Vintage Railway is situated about 25 min from the Drury motorway turnoff.
Take the road to Waiuku and the Glenbrook turn off it is well signposted on the left about 22km from the turnoff
There is a fairly large carpark and access to the station is across the railway tracks but a wheel chair should be able to access it easily. The steam trains run mostly on weekends there was a photo I sent of the train times. There is a toilet and when the trains are running there is a light refreshment kiosk. When the trains are running you take a lovely steam train ride down the tracks and sometimes they stop at the workshop where they restore and repair the trains and you can have a quick look around.
They also run a Day Out with Thomas for those that have Thomas the Tank Engine fans among their grandchildren. Check their website for details.
On the Glenbrook road before you get to Glenbrook there is a lovely little café called Calendula Cottage that also has easy access and the food is fairly reasonably priced and the cakes are really good. There is inside and outdoor seating with sun umbrella’s and pagodas, when I was there the customers were of all ages with a good proportion of older people.
Waiku Junktion and Op Shops
While near Waiuku it would be a good opportunity to visit Waiuku Zero Waste at 5, Hosking Place where reusable items are rescued from going into the landfill and sold at reasonable prices. You can pick up a bargain there from books, crockery, games to tools and odds and ends; I always find a bargain there.
Then in the Waiuku town ship there are 2 very good op shops St John at 4, Court Street some good quality items there. And the St Andrews op shop just around the corner at 79 Queen Street Waiuku where there is always a bargain to hunt down.
